Question of the Month: Two Basics for Enjoying Life Success
Which of the following notables is the original source for informing us, in a memorable and frequently cited quote, that “love and work are the two basic essential to enjoying a successful life.”
A) Mae West (comedian)
B) Charles Schultz (cartoonist)
C) Amelia Earhart (aviator)
D) Sigmund Freud (psychiatrist)
A. "To err is human - but it feels divine."
Mae West provided us with a number of well-known and humorous quotes such as: Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before, and, To err is human - but it feels divine. Mae made frequent allusions to the "love" aspect of the cited quote and she also loved her work. The nature of the love and work that she was famous for, however, had a decidedly different implication than that indicated in this particular quote.

B. "Life is like a ten-speed bicycle"...
Charles Schultz speaking through the characters in his world famous Peanuts cartoon created a huge number of wonderfully quotable quotes, such as this by Charlie Brown: Life is like a ten-speed bicycle. Most of us have gears we never use. Here's another favorite by Snoopy: My life has no purpose, no direction, no aim, no meaning, and yet I'm Happy. I can't figure it out. What am I doing right? Charles Schultz clearly found a happy niche in life through his work as a cartoonist. While his career gives validity to the cited quote neither he nor Snoopy is its author.

C. The "dare-to-do" way...
Amelia Earhart's life reflects the astuteness of this quote and she is remembered for a many of her own, such as: The more one does and sees and feels the more genuine becomes one's appreciation of fundamental things like home, love, and understanding companionship. The "dare-to-do" way in which Amelia lived her life continues to stir the imagination and inspires many to push through those risk-aversion barriers that can prevent us from pursuing our passion. While Amelia may have been an advocate of the quote, she is not it's author.

D. "Lieben und Arbeiten."
The originator of this quote was Sigmund Freud, although as a German, his actual words were "Lieben und Arbeiten." Freud offered this insight in response to the question: What is the essence of the good life? While Freud acknowledged that life is inevitably filled with conflict and painful difficulties, he advocated that we don't have to let our troubles drag us into despair. Creating mutually helpful relations with people we love and engaging in work that helps others live better lives was, Freud claimed, the way to fill our own lives with meaning and purpose.
